Pakistani actor Sanam Saeed has found herself at the centre of an online debate after her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival was described by several social media users and entertainment pages as “South Asian representation” rather than specifically Pakistani representation.
The discussion began shortly after photos and videos of Saeed’s Cannes red carpet appearance went viral online. Dressed in a couture ensemble by Pakistani designer Hussain Rehar, the actor received praise for showcasing traditional craftsmanship and Pakistani fashion on an international platform.
However, many Pakistani users on X and Instagram objected to captions and posts that referred to her appearance broadly as “South Asian representation,” arguing that Pakistani artists are often grouped under a regional identity while their national identity is overlooked.
Several users pointed out that Saeed’s outfit, styling and tribute to legendary Pakistani cinema icon Shamim Ara clearly reflected Pakistani culture and heritage.
Critics of the wording said international coverage should acknowledge Pakistan directly instead of using umbrella regional terms.
Others defended the phrase, arguing that Pakistan is geographically part of South Asia and that both identities can coexist. Supporters also noted that many artists from the region commonly describe themselves as South Asian in global entertainment and fashion spaces.
The debate gained further attention after Saeed addressed the issue in an Instagram post, saying she attended Cannes “as a South Asian woman representing Pakistan and our heritage and craft.”
Her statement was widely shared online, with many interpreting it as an attempt to balance both regional and national identities.
While the controversy continued across social media platforms, many fans praised the actor for bringing Pakistani fashion and artistry to one of the world’s biggest film events. Others shifted the conversation toward broader discussions about cultural identity, representation and how Pakistani celebrities are portrayed internationally.
