Doctors at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital have successfully saved the eyesight of premature twin boys in what has been described as a significant medical achievement.
Seven-month-old twins, Ibrahim and Ismail, were diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a potentially blinding condition that affects babies born too early.
Following the diagnosis, doctors immediately began treatment, preventing permanent damage to their vision.
The children’s mother said that timely medical intervention had saved her sons’ eyesight and expressed gratitude to the medical team.
According to Dr Amjad, screening of premature babies must be made mandatory. He noted that nearly one million babies are born each year prematurely, and those weighing less than 1.5 kilograms at birth are at greater risk of vision complications.
He added that maintaining balanced oxygen levels significantly reduces the likelihood of ROP.
The hospital further stated that under its dedicated ROP programme, treatment has so far been provided to 19,000 children affected by vision-related complications.
