Nurse dies after contracting deadly Nipah virus in India

A 25-year-old nurse in India’s West Bengal died weeks after contracting Nipah virus.

According to health officials, the nurse died of cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Barasat after getting infected. She earlier tested negative for the virus but remained critically ill due to secondary infections and weakened immunity after a prolonged coma.

Officials said she was one of two healthcare workers diagnosed with Nipah in the state earlier this year; the other, a male nurse, recovered and was discharged. 

West Bengal’s health department claimed that her death was due to cardiac arrest rather than active Nipah infection, though complications linked to the virus contributed to her decline.
