KARACHI: The outbreak of conjunctivitis, commonly known as “red eye” or “pink eye” infection, is spreading rapidly across the city, with both public and private hospitals reporting dozens of cases daily.
Patients are presenting with symptoms such as redness, pain, swelling, irritation from light, and excessive tearing.
Health experts have attributed the surge to the monsoon season, high humidity, and poor sanitation, noting that adenovirus is spreading quickly under these conditions.
Head of Ophthalmology at Jinnah Hospital Karachi confirmed that cases have significantly increased since the recent rains, with 15 to 20 patients visiting daily.
He explained that the infection is primarily transmitted through hand contact, particularly when an infected person rubs their eyes and then shakes hands with others. In most cases, only one eye is initially affected.

For mild infections, cold compresses or chilled water are sufficient, while artificial tear drops are recommended for moderate to severe cases, as they are safe and free from side effects.
However, he cautioned against the self-use of steroid eye drops like Betnesol, which may provide temporary relief but can cause long-term damage. In severe cases, the cornea may be affected, leading to blurred vision, acute light sensitivity, and intense pain.
An ophthalmologist at Civil Hospital Karachi also confirmed receiving 10 to 12 conjunctivitis patients daily from various localities, including Quaidabad, Keamari, Baldia Town, and Liaquatabad.
