The mortality rate in Sindh’s government hospitals among critically ill children is less than in other under-developing countries, revealed a study conducted by a US-based global health network.

The study by PALISI Global Health aimed to measure the burden of pediatric acute critical illness in resource-constrained settings.

The researchers analysed the year’s statistics of specifically evaluated pediatric emergency wards from 2021 to 2022 at Sindh government’s Civil Hospital Karachi and Shiekh Zayed Children Hospital in Larkana.

According to the research, as many as 1.2 percent of children with critical illness died, however, the number is least from the average 6.3 percent across 46 sites in 19 low-income countries.

Major parameters set for the success were well-trained and dedicated healthcare professionals, adequate supplies and equipment, properly designed medical facilities, and continuous support of collaboration from various sectors.

The outcome revealed that strengthening the health care system of Sindh showed that the government was providing well-trained staff, enhancing resource allocation, and the government’s collaboration with ChildLife Foundation brought betterment in the child health care system, shrinking the burden of critical illness and mortality.

Sindh government treated six million children under the public-private partnership model in 13 years in the public hospital in Sindh.

The authorities in the province modernised nine child Emergency Rooms (ERs) in public hospitals, resulting in a significant increase in survival rate among critically ill children.
