‘Before we can grieve one tragedy, there is another’: Hania Aamir

Actor Hania Aamir has reacted to police action against families of Pakistani sailors who have been held hostage by Somali pirates, questioning how many more tragedies people are expected to witness before "something actually changes".

In an Instagram story on Tuesday, Hania shared a video of the police crackdown on the protestors on Karachi’s Sharea Faisal. “There is something deeply frightening about how quickly we are being forced to move from one tragedy, one injustice, to the next,” she wrote.

“Before we can grieve one [tragedy], there is another,” she added. “And somewhere in that cycle, accountability disappears. How much more are we expected to witness before something actually changes," she questioned.

Her comments came a day after some family members of the hostages claimed that they were briefly detained by police while preparing for a march seeking the sailors’ release.

The police, however, denied forcibly dispersing the protesters. They said officers had “engaged” with the families and asked them to vacate the protest site near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs liaison office.

The sailors were taken hostage by Somali pirates in April and have appeared in several videos since then, appealing to the Pakistani government to help secure their release.
