Woman who assaulted siblings in Karachi DHA gets interim bail

Maryam Ali Raza, a woman nominated as an accused in a case involving the assault of a brother and sister in Karachi’s Defence area, has obtained one-week interim bail from the court.

The Karachi South Sessions Court approved her interim bail and barred police from arresting her for one week.

During the hearing, Maryam Ali Raza’s lawyer, Rehman Korai, argued that his client had approached the court to seek protection from arrest. After hearing the arguments, the court granted Maryam Ali Raza interim bail for one week and restrained police from arresting her during this period.

According to police officials, Maryam Ali Raza, her son Hamid, her daughter and police personnel accompanying them allegedly assaulted Syeda Noor-ul-Ain and her brother. Police said that following the incident, the siblings were also allegedly threatened with serious consequences. A case was subsequently registered and further investigation was launched.

It is pertinent to mention that a video of the incident, which took place recently in Khayaban-e-Bukhari in Defence, surfaced on social media.

In the footage, Maryam Ali Raza can allegedly be seen assaulting a woman with a dumbbell, while two police officers were also present at the scene.

Following the incident, another video emerged showing a member of the affected family being taken to a police station by police personnel. The development raised questions about the role of the police and alleged bias in the registration of the case.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered on the complaint of Syeda Noor-ul-Ain, the incident began when a police officer rang the doorbell of the flat and told her, “Madam Maryam is calling you to the ground floor.”

The FIR states that shortly afterwards, Maryam Ali Raza allegedly came upstairs while using abusive language and kicked the door. When the door was opened, she allegedly grabbed Noor-ul-Ain by her hair, snatched her mobile phone and threw it downstairs. She also allegedly engaged in a physical altercation with Noor-ul-Ain’s mother when she arrived at the scene.

The FIR further states that Maryam Ali Raza later returned along with her daughter and police personnel and allegedly assaulted Noor-ul-Ain with a dumbbell. Police have launched a further investigation into the incident.

Following the incident, DIG South Asad Raza had ordered an inquiry. The investigation was conducted under the supervision of the SSP Investigation South.

In its report, the inquiry committee held SSP Korangi Fida Janwari and four police personnel responsible for negligence and administrative lapses, and recommended legal and departmental action against them.

The report recommended action against SSP Korangi Fida Janwari under the relevant performance and discipline rules. It also determined the roles of the other police personnel involved.

The committee further recommended that the case registered against the affected family be classified as a “B-Class” case and closed, while a separate assault case be registered on the family’s complaint.

Maryam Ali Raza’s interim bail has been granted for one week, while police continue their further investigation into the case.
