Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered to Tihar Jail in India after the Delhi High Court turned down his request for more time to surrender in connection with his conviction in several cheque-bounce case.

According to Indian media, Yadav reached the jail at around 4pm and formalities were under way.

The surrender came a day after the high court rejected the actor’s plea seeking a one-week extension to settle his dues. Yadav’s lawyers had told the court that arrangements had been made to pay Rs50 million as part of a settlement and asked for additional time.

However, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma declined to grant any further relief, observing that no valid grounds had been presented. The order was passed on revision petitions filed by Yadav and his wife against a 2019 sessions court decision, which had upheld their conviction in cases related to bounced cheques from April 2018.

Earlier, in June 2024, the high court had suspended Yadav’s conviction temporarily to allow him time to resolve the dispute with the complainant. The trial court had sentenced the actor to six months in jail after holding that he failed to clear his financial liabilities.

His counsel had argued that the cheques were issued for a business deal connected to a film project that later collapsed.
