Bollywood actor Vikrant Massey, known for his role in "12th Fail," opened up about his family's diverse religious background. His mother practices Sikhism, his father Christianity, and his brother found faith in Islam. Both Massey and his wife follow Hinduism.
Vikrant disclosed in a recent interview that his older brother embraced Islam at the age of 17, and his family respected his choice.
Speaking about his elder brother, he said,“My brother’s name is Moeen, I am called Vikrant. You’d wonder why the name Moeen? He converted to Islam, and my family let him change his religion. They said, ‘Beta, if you find satisfaction in this, then go ahead.’ He converted at the age of 17, it is a big step. My mother is Sikhni, my father is church-going Christian, he goes to church twice a week. From a young age, I have seen a lot of arguments related to religion and spirituality.”
The ‘Gaslight’ actor stated that his father stood by his decision to support his child's choice in following a different religion, even when some relatives expressed concerns.
Vikrant furthered on, “My father was questioned by my extended relatives about how he could ‘allow’ that (brother’s conversion). He said that it was none of their business. He is my son, he is only answerable to me and has all the rights to choose what he wants. After seeing this, I went on my own quest, wondering what exactly is religion. It is man made.”
Discussing his religious perspective, he shared that he views his religion as an integral part of his cultural identity, not solely as a means to seek blessings.
“[...] I don’t believe that if I do Laxmi Puja (worship of the Hindu goddess) then I will be blessed with wealth. I do it because I grew up witnessing it, and it is now my lifestyle. My father would do it. He goes to church twice a week, but he also does puja with my mother and my wife. So, it is a beautiful house,” he remarked.
Massey's recent movie, "12th Fail," directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, catapulted him to stardom, earning critical acclaim and recognition as one of the year's best films.
