Renowned actor Sohai Ali Abro opined that celebrities often promote social causes primarily to enhance their public image and social media presence.
Sohai Ali Abro recently appeared on a comedy show where she argued that actors should prioritize entertainment over social messaging in their work, claiming that it can compromise the essence of their craft.
"I try to focus on entertainment," she said, adding, "If a positive message emerges unintentionally from my work, that's great, but it's not my primary goal."
The Pyarey Afzal maintained that social activism today often involves "jumping on the bandwagon," as famous personalities seek to use social issues as a platform to stay in the spotlight.
Host Vasay Chaudhry also echoed Sohai's opinion, asserting that “celebrities and sports personalities often take up causes for a limited time because they are trending, and then they fail to continue their advocacy for those specific causes.”
Sohai chimed in, saying that the intention behind promoting such causes is to portray themselves in a positive light.
"If one becomes an activist simply by sharing a social media post, then their activism is very weak," added Vasay.
For Sohai, activism can also be embraced by bringing about small social changes, but it doesn't necessarily require that “I should hold a placard or share my two cents on every issue.”
The Jawani Phir Nahi Ani starlet said that she refrains from giving her opinion when she feels it's not necessary and she prefers to work on something more tangible and effective on the ground.
As Vasay mentioned about people filming themselves giving charity and calling it a "cheap" publicity stunt, Sohai added that as a prominent figure, she also avoids such publicity, especially in the age of social media.
