Renowned actor Saba Qamar has been appointed Unicef’s first National Ambassador for Child Rights in Pakistan on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child.
Saba Qamar called the appointment an “honour,” expressing her commitment to promoting the mission “of achieving every right for every child wherever I am.”
“In my recent travels, I’ve witnessed both the challenges children and women face in this country, as well as the remarkable impact of Unicef’s dedicated efforts,” she added.
The Kamli star pledged to help children realise their dreams and aspirations.
Previously, Saba took to Instagram to share photos of her interaction with young girls without disclosing any details of her visit.
“Met some super amazing people this week and had some wonderful experiences. Tons of stories to share!” she captioned her post.
Saba plans to use her platform to raise awareness about critical issues such as child marriage, lack of education, gender inequality, climate change, and other child rights concerns.
According to data shared by Unicef, one in six women in Pakistan are married during childhood, with nearly 19 million child brides across the country. Most of them have children before turning 18.
If collective efforts are not made to address this issue, child marriage is expected to persist in Pakistan for decades to come.
Unicef Representative in Pakistan, Abdullah Fadil, welcomed Saba Qamar’s new role, stating, “Ms Qamar is a brave and powerful advocate for women’s and girls’ rights.”
“We look forward to collaborating closely [with her] to draw attention to some of the biggest challenges facing children in Pakistan today and accelerating our efforts to help every child reach their true potential,” he added.
