Karachi witnesses alarming rise in rape cases

Karachi has seen a worrisome increase in violent crime of rape during the last 1.5 year, it emerged on Thursday.

According to the reports, rape cases have increased by 41% from July 2021 to December 2022. Court heard the 426 rape cases, out of which only 55 suspects indicted.

Over 200 women and girls were subjected to sexual assault in the metropolis in 2022 according to the report of Karachi police.

The Karachi police statistics show that in eight of the 216 abuse cases, the victims were aged five years or less, 40 were between six and 10, 38 were between 15 and 18, and 95 were over 18.

On the other hand, the shocking figures compiled with the help of record of medico-legal officers posted at the three major hospitals of the metropolis, the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), showed that over 500 sexual abuse cases have been reported in the city in 2022.

The report said that 513 women were sexually assaulted while 3,649 women became victim of domestic violence, who had been brought to the hospitals for medical examination

Report further said that Karachi’s East, South, Korangi and Malir districts have witnessed sudden upsurge in the sexual assault cases.
