Parliamentary Secretary Sajid Mehdi informed the National Assembly (NA) that a total of 86,000 SIM cards have been deactivated due to their involvement in anti-state activities.

The statement was made in response to a call-to-attention notice raised by Asiya Naz Tanoli concerning the proliferation of misinformation on social media platforms.

Mr. Mehdi acknowledged that the government had blocked the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to combat misinformation, and he reiterated that 86,000 SIM cards had been blocked for similar reasons.

He indicated to the NA that amendments to the Electronic Crimes Act are anticipated shortly to enhance regulations aimed at addressing fake news.

Furthermore, Mr. Mehdi confirmed that the use of VPNs has also been limited to manage the dissemination of misinformation.

“A task force has been established under the Prime Minister’s directive to address the issue of fake news. Awareness campaigns are being expanded to educational institutions, including universities, colleges, and schools.”

He compared Pakistan’s strategy for dealing with fake news to international standards, noting: “Globally, fake news does not receive the same level of attention, and there is a greater emphasis on freedom of expression.”

The parliamentary secretary remarked that while proactive measures against fake news present challenges on a global scale, the government remains dedicated to reducing its adverse effects.
