Pakistan suffered an estimated loss of over Rs4 billion following the closure of its airspace during the recent military standoff with India, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif informed the National Assembly on Friday.

Speaking in the NA, the minister said that the restrictions were put in place in the aftermath of Marka-e-Haq. The government's decision to close its airspace to Indian aircraft prompted New Delhi to impose reciprocal airspace restrictions, he added.

According to the Pakistan Airports Authority, 100 to 150 Indian flights were affected daily after Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian aircraft. From April 24 to June 30, the authority recorded losses of Rs4.1 billion.

The minister recalled that in 2019, Pakistan also shut its airspace following a military flare-up with India, resulting in a loss of Rs7.6 billion.

Despite the financial setback, Asif said the government stood firm in its decision, citing national defence and sovereignty as overriding priorities. “Security and the protection of our borders come before economic considerations,” he told lawmakers.

At present, Pakistan’s airspace remains open to international carriers with the exception of Indian airlines. Pakistani carriers, meanwhile, continue to face a ban on flying through Indian airspace.
