Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman, Asif Ali Zardari, was sworn in as the country’s 14th president on Sunday and decided to give the responsibilities of the country's First Lady to his younger daughter Aseefa Bhutto Zardari.
It will be the first time in the history of Pakistan that the President’s daughter will be the First Lady.
Zardari, during his oath-taking ceremony at the President’s House in Islamabad, was accompanied by Aseefa.
The news was broken by Bakhtwar Bhutto Zardari on her microblogging site's official handle.
"From accompanying President Asif Ali Zardari to all his court hearings to fighting for his release from jail - now by his side as First Lady of Pakistan, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari," she wrote in a post.
After an official announcement, Aseefa will be given the protocol and privileges befitting as First Lady.
A first lady is the President’s wife, however, Asif Ali Zardari became a widower after his wife, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was martyred in 2007.
Since then, Zardari did not marry and the position of First Lady also remained vacant during his first tenure as the country’s president, from 2008 to 2013.
It is pertinent to mention that Aseefa was a teenager in the first tenure of Asif Ali Zardari.
Apart from this, Aseefa emerged as an active politician during the campaign of the recently concluded polls on February 8.
She appeared side by side with her brother Bilawal Bhutto Zardari during public gatherings.
31-year-old Aseefa made her political debut on November 30, 2020, at PPP rally in Multan.
