China says it is actively working to reduce tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan after fresh clashes erupted along their shared border.
Speaking at a routine press briefing on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that Beijing has been using its diplomatic channels to encourage communication between the two neighbours.
She said that China is closely monitoring the evolving situation and remains prepared to help calm tensions. According to Mao, Beijing is willing to continue playing what she described as a “constructive role” in improving ties between Islamabad and Kabul.
Addressing the recent violence, she stated, "Pakistan and Afghanistan are neighbours that cannot be moved away, and both are also China's neighbours. As a neighboring country and friend, China is deeply concerned about the escalation of the conflict and deeply saddened by the casualties it has caused."
Mao reiterated China’s position against terrorism in all forms and urged both sides to avoid further escalation. She called on the two countries to stay calm, show restraint, and resolve their disagreements through dialogue and consultation. She also stressed the need to achieve a ceasefire at the earliest opportunity and prevent further loss of life.
The spokesperson added that China’s Foreign Ministry, along with its embassies in Pakistan and Afghanistan, is in contact with relevant authorities in both countries regarding the situation.
Mao further said China has asked both governments to ensure the safety and security of Chinese nationals, projects and institutions operating in their territories.
