Lamine Yamal becomes Barcelona's youngest captain at 19

Lamine Yamal’s extraordinary rise at Barcelona reached another landmark on Wednesday night when the 19-year-old forward became the youngest captain in the club’s history, wearing the armband during Barcelona’s emphatic 5-1 Champions League victory over Feyenoord.

Yamal took the captain’s armband in the 71st minute, after first-choice captain Raphinha was substituted.

The moment was more than a symbolic gesture. It represented the latest stage in the rapid transformation of a player who only a few years ago was viewed as one of La Masia’s most promising teenagers and is now being entrusted with leadership of one of world football’s biggest clubs. 

At 19 years and 58 days, Yamal surpassed the previous Barcelona record held by Bojan Krkić, who captained the first team at the age of 20 during a 2010 Copa del Rey match. 

Yamal was already having a major influence on the Feyenoord match before receiving the armband. He helped create Barcelona's opening goal for Raphinha and later contributed to Gabriel Jesus' first Champions League goal for the club.

Then, shortly after becoming captain, Yamal produced perhaps the defining image of the night.

In the 77th minute, he scored with a spectacular direct free-kick, adding another highlight to an evening in which Barcelona overwhelmed their Dutch opponents. The goal came only minutes after the teenager had assumed the captaincy, making the sequence particularly striking: Barcelona's youngest captain was immediately leading from the front. 

The performance was not merely about goals and assists. Yamal produced four key passes, seven successful dribbles and a 93% passing accuracy, according to Spanish outlet AS, underlining how influential he was throughout the match. 

Yamal's appointment as captain did not come completely out of nowhere.

Barcelona had already announced him as one of the club's five captains for the 2026-27 season.

Raphinha and Pedri were selected as the first two captains by manager Hansi Flick, while Eric García, Frenkie de Jong and Yamal were chosen by the players.
