Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Monday inaugurated the first electric bus service in Mianwali, marking the city as the starting point for the Punjab government’s clean and modern public transport initiative.
The inaugural ceremony was held at the local sports stadium after the chief minister boarded a bus from Ikram Shaheed Chowk. The route was decorated with banners to welcome her.
Maryam Nawaz said the Punjab government had ordered 1,500 electric buses, of which 200 had already been delivered. “This project is not only a technological upgrade but also a commitment to a cleaner and greener Punjab. We have chosen Mianwali as the starting point to ensure development reaches every corner of the province, not just major urban centres,” she said.
The first fleet consists of 15 buses, each equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and accessibility features for disabled passengers. Initially, the service will operate on key routes within Mianwali district, with plans to expand to other districts in the coming months.
Residents of Mianwali welcomed the service, expressing hope that it would ease local transport challenges and set new standards for public transport in the province.
