Family of man who died after car collided with Red Line project barrier seeks Rs172m compensation

The family of a citizen who was allegedly killed in an accident due to inadequate safety arrangements during construction of the Red Line project has filed a suit seeking more than Rs172 million in compensation.

The suit was filed before the Senior Civil Judge Malir against the Sindh government, Malir Cantonment Board, Red Line project director, contractor and others.

According to the plaintiff's lawyer, Advocate Usman Farooq, the victim, Shahid, was returning home late at night with his wife and child in January this year when their vehicle collided with a barrier placed in the middle of the road near Jinnah Avenue.

Shahid died in the accident while his wife and child sustained injuries, the lawyer said.

The suit contends that the barriers placed in the middle of the road had neither reflectors nor warning signs. It further states that the absence of streetlights made the barriers difficult to see at night.

According to the plaintiff's counsel, the accident occurred due to alleged negligence and inadequate safety arrangements during the Red Line construction.

He said it was the responsibility of those overseeing the construction work to provide safe passage and adequate safety measures for road users.

The lawyer said the deceased was the family's sole breadwinner and his death had resulted from the alleged negligence of the authorities and other parties responsible for the project.

The plaintiff has requested the court to order the defendants to pay Rs172.12 million in compensation.
