Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry criticised religious scholars for issuing a fatwa of jihad against Israel, emphasising that those declaring such decrees should be the first to lead the armed struggle themselves.

Taking to X, Chaudhry offered to fund travel expenses for religious scholars who are “interested” in waging war against Israel and helping Palestinians on the ground.

His remarks came in response to a fatwa issued on Thursday by Pakistan’s top religious scholar and President Wafaq ul Madaris Al-Arabia, Mufti Taqi Usmani, who declared that jihad for Gaza has become obligatory on Muslim governments.

Usmani stated that more than 50,000 Muslims had been “slaughtered by Israel,” and that the time had come for Islamic governments, including Pakistan to take concrete action.

He also called for a complete and peaceful boycott of Israeli products and companies supporting Israel, stating that harming life or property during protests is prohibited in Islam.

Chaudhry, in a taunting tone, maintained that while scholars were urging others to join the fight, they themselves should be on the frontlines.

“The clerics who have declared jihad against Israel today are absolutely right. For this noble cause, I have decided to personally fund the travel of 100 esteemed clerics and scholars from Pakistan to Gaza,” his post on X read.

“I hope these elders, who will be delivering fiery speeches today, will gladly accept this wonderful offer, submit their passports tomorrow, and set off on their journey, Inshallah,” he added.

Chaudhry also criticised religious political parties for vandalising KFC outlets in Pakistan and urged them to contribute meaningfully to the Palestinian cause.
