The federal government has decided to import one million tonnes of wheat to meet the requirements of the provinces and ensure a stable domestic supply.

The decision was made after detailed consultations between the federal government and all provincial governments on wheat availability, prices and supply, with the aim of ensuring affordable and quality wheat for consumers.

Under the agreed plan, wheat stocks currently held by the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) will be released immediately to meet provincial requirements.

However, participants in the meeting concluded that the provinces' combined demand exceeds PASSCO's available reserves. As a result, the government decided to import one million tonnes of wheat to bridge the shortfall and maintain market stability.

Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain said the government remained committed to ensuring the availability of affordable and quality wheat across the country.

He said PASSCO's wheat stocks would be distributed to the provinces without delay, while the planned imports would help meet domestic demand and keep the market stable.
