Elderly woman Hamida Banu who was trafficked to Pakistan two decades ago in 2002, finally returned to her home in India on Monday.
75-year-old Hamida was reportedly lured by human traffickers under the false pretense of employment in Dubai and was forcibly brought to Pakistan.
Without any legal documents, she found it impossible to return to her homeland.
Her repatriation was made possible through the coordinated efforts of Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
Journalist Ravinder Singh Robin shared the update on X, confirming that Hamida was handed over to Indian authorities at the Attari–Wagah in Punjab.
In a previous interview, Hamida revealed how she had lost hope of ever reuniting with her family.
She prayed fervently to God, longing to meet her children and return to her roots. Eventually, she managed to contact her children, and the Indian government confirmed her citizenship, paving the way for her return.
Hamida expressed immense gratitude, saying she would offer a prayer of thankfulness upon reaching India. She shared her eagerness to meet her elder daughter first, recalling the years she spent in Pakistan longing for her family.
During her time in Pakistan, Hamida said she was overcome with regret for not being physically present with her children. She had worked tirelessly to provide for them while her parents took care of their upbringing.
Now reunited with her family, Hamida stated that she will hug her children and cry tears of joy.
