Inside the Mir Raza Ali murder case: Key facts and questions

The mystery surrounding the alleged abduction and murder of 25-year-old Karachi entrepreneur Mir Raza Ali remains unsolved, with investigators continuing to examine multiple leads to identify those responsible.

Mir Raza Ali, an Institute of Business Administration (IBA) graduate and founder of Waflix, returned home from his shop near Bahadurabad Chowrangi on the night of July 28.

According to the FIR, he informed his mother at around 4 a.m. that he was stepping downstairs and would return within 10 minutes. However, he never came back.

His family said that when repeated attempts to contact him failed and his mobile phone was found switched off, they began searching for him and also alerted Madadgar-15.

The following day, police recovered an unidentified body from bushes near Shadi Qila in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 1. According to investigators, the victim had been subjected to severe torture before being shot dead. Burn marks on parts of the body made identification difficult.

Police later confirmed that Mir Raza Ali's father, Mir Hussain Ali, identified the body through the victim's clothing. Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya stated that the deceased had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim's father said the family had no known personal enmity, financial disputes, or business conflicts. He described his son as an accomplished IBA graduate who excelled in marketing and said the family had been left devastated by his death.

According to police, investigators have decided to rely on digital forensic techniques after finding no CCTV footage from the crime scene.

Initial findings indicate that Mir Raza Ali booked an online taxi after leaving his home and subsequently disappeared. An abduction case was later registered at Ferozabad Police Station on the complaint of his father.

Police believe the victim was brutally tortured before being shot, while the body also showed signs of burning and appeared to have been left for several days.

Investigators suspect the body was dumped near the University Road Bus Rapid Transit corridor and believe two to four suspects may have been involved.

A crime scene inspection revealed that there were no government surveillance cameras within a 200-metre radius.

Although a nearby private school had security cameras installed, police said they were not operational, limiting the availability of visual evidence.

Investigators are now relying on geofencing, mobile phone records, and other digital evidence to trace the suspects.

Police have also inspected the victim's commercial kitchen and business premises. Officials said Mir Raza Ali never reached the kitchen on the day he disappeared, and all equipment, including waffle-making machines, was found untouched. Statements from employees working nearby are also being recorded as part of the investigation.

Separately, investigators are examining information provided by the online taxi driver regarding a guest house. However, preliminary findings suggest Mir Raza Ali may never have reached the location, adding another layer of complexity to the case.

Based on the evidence gathered so far, police suspect that someone known to the victim may have been involved in the crime. Investigators are continuing to collect both conventional and digital evidence in an effort to identify and arrest those responsible.

Several key questions remain unanswered: Was Mir Raza Ali killed immediately after his alleged abduction?

Why did investigators initially describe the body as being several days old? Who made the last phone call to the victim, and what was the final route of the online taxi? Was the motive ransom, a personal dispute, or a business-related conflict?

The case has also prompted comparisons with the recent Mustafa Amir murder case because both incidents involved allegations that the victims' bodies were burned after the killings.

However, investigators have not established any connection between the two cases, and police say any similarities remain speculative until the investigation is completed.
