A senior Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi on Wednesday submitted his resignation to the President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi.
Justice Naqvi resigned from the office as the Supreme Judicial Council is currently investigating allegations of corruption and incomplete asset declarations.
In his resignation letter, Justice Naqvi maintained, “It was an honour to be appointed to serve as a Judge first of the Lahore High Court, Lahore and then as the Supreme Court of Pakistan."
"In the circumstances which are a matter of public knowledge and to some extent public record, It is no longer possible for me to continue to serve as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Considerations of the due process also compel so. I, therefore, effective today resign as a Judge of the Supreme Court of pakistan,” he added.
The Supreme Court had Tuesday rejected Justice Naqvi’s plea to halt the SJC's inquiry against corruption charges against him.
Earlier, Justice Mazahar Naqvi had submitted a detailed response to the show cause to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).
In his reply, Justice Mazahir Naqvi denied the allegations levelled against him and said that while the Supreme Judicial Council can receive information regarding a judge, it lacks the authority to take action on any complaints against the judge.
