Lahore has once again ranked first among the most polluted cities in the world today. Authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities as smog levels worsen across the city with an AQI of 251.
According to air quality monitoring data, Lahore’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 251, which falls under the “very unhealthy” category. This level of pollution poses serious health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
In some areas, the situation is even more alarming ,particularly along Burki Road, where the AQI was measured at 485 earlier in the morning, before 7 am.
Such a high reading is considered “hazardous”, meaning that the entire population can experience severe health effects and outdoor activities should be avoided.
Along with Lahore, the air in several other cities of Punjab is also extremely hazardous to health.
In the list of the world’s most polluted cities, India’s capital New Delhi ranks second, while Iraq’s capital Baghdad is in third place.
According to the Air Quality Index (AQI), Karachi ranks fourth with an AQI of 181, and India’s city Kolkata holds the fifth position.
Environmental experts attribute this persistent smog to vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, crop residue burning, and unfavorable weather conditions that trap pollutants close to the ground. Authorities continue to urge citizens to wear masks, limit outdoor exposure, and avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors until air quality improves.
