Around 22 million young men and women are waiting for to get married in Pakistan, according to UN census report published in 2023.
The alarming figure has sparked concerns among experts, who point to the high expectaions made by girls and their families as a major contributing factor.
In an interview with a private news channel, renowned matchmaker Shazia Rahman shed light on this complex issue.
"The number of unmarried individuals in Pakistan is likely much higher than reported," Rahman revealed.
"The main reason for this is the high demands and expectations made by girls," she added.
The marriage broker explained that many girls prioritise partner's degree and salary for marriage, often dismissing any prospects who don't meet their standards.
"While these demands are legitimate, they have become a hurdle to marriage," she noted.
"The problem isn't a lack of marriages in Pakistan, but rather the insistence on marrying based on individual demands and wishes."
According to Rahman, boys also have similar expectations, who seek young employed partners who can contribute to the household income amidst rising inflation in Pakistan.
