The mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, has announced complete renovation at Karachi Zoo, approving construction of new enclosures, additional staffing, and tighter oversight of zoo operations.
During a recent inspection, Wahab gave the green light to build bigger, more modern habitats for animals and ordered the hiring of extra personnel to improve day-to-day management.
In a directive to the zoo administration, the mayor also stressed the need for improved transparency in all aspects, notably insisting on monthly medical reports for the animals and full disclosure of kitchen operations, including hygiene and food-preparation standards.
Officials say these reforms are part of a larger agenda to re built Karachi Zoo not just as a traditional zoo but as a full-fledged recreational, educational, and conservation-focused facility. The plan includes ensuring better care for animals, more humane habitats, and enhanced visitor experience, in line with global standards.
The mayor’s announcement follows growing scrutiny over animal welfare at the zoo: a recent inspection by a committee appointed by Sindh High Court (SHC) had revealed gaps in enclosure conditions, veterinary care, and hygiene standards.
Local authorities now say the new measures, upgraded enclosures, additional staff, regular health updates, and transparent kitchen management are aimed at restoring public confidence and improving living conditions for the zoo’s animals.
