Met Office forecasts heavy rainfall in Karachi till Aug 23

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall in Karachi and several other parts of Sindh from August 17 to 23, as strong monsoon winds begin to sweep across the province.

In a weather advisory issued on Sunday, the Met Office said that under the influence of these monsoon currents, rain and thunderstorms—with isolated heavy downpours—are expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Larkana, Qambar Shahdadkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, Tharparkar and surrounding districts.

Karachi is likely to receive rain with thunder and lightning on Monday and Tuesday, with heavier spells possible in certain localities, the advisory noted.

The PMD warned that the expected weather could disrupt daily routines, trigger urban flooding, and lead to water accumulation in low-lying areas. It also cautioned that strong winds and heavy rainfall may damage fragile structures such as weak rooftops, electric poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels.

Farmers across affected areas have been advised to plan agricultural activities with the forecast in mind.

Meanwhile, the water level at Guddu and Sukkur barrages remains at low flood status, while the Kotri Barrage is reported to be flowing normally.

The latest advisory comes amid ongoing damage and loss of life in northern Pakistan, where over 300 deaths have been reported due to rain-related incidents, flash floods, and landslides.

The PMD added that isolated heavy rainfall is also expected in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Pothohar region, Kashmir, south Punjab, northeast and southern Balochistan, and parts of southeast Sindh, particularly during the evening and night hours.
