Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said on Sunday that most of the demands put forward by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) have already been met by the government.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, he said that 35 out of 38 agreed demands had been implemented.

He rejected claims that only a small number of demands were fulfilled, calling such reports “negative propaganda”. He said the issue should not be used to create unrest and stressed that dialogue remains the only solution.

The minister questioned whether recent tensions were aimed at presenting Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) as separate entities or weakening the relationship between them. He also asked whether attempts were being made to link the situation with Indian-occupied Kashmir and undermine the Kashmir cause.

Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said the government had not ignored the demands of the JAAC. He added that while discussions were always welcome, they should not be replaced with violent protests.
He said talks could still be held on the remaining points, but stressed that law and order must be maintained and violence avoided.

At the beginning of the briefing, the minister said some groups were trying to create unrest ahead of the July 27 elections in AJK. He said there were efforts to revive past waves of protest in the region.
