MQM-Pakistan has demanded tax relief for traders affected by the Gul Plaza fire incident.
MQM leader and Deputy Parliamentary Leader in the Sindh Assembly, Taha Ahmed Khan, has written a letter to the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), seeking special tax concessions for the affected traders in the tax year 2026.
According to the contents of the letter, the fire incident completely destroyed the traders’ businesses and records, leaving them temporarily unable to meet their tax obligations.
Taha Ahmed Khan stated that the affected shopkeepers are currently in no position to pay taxes.
The letter calls for exemptions from income tax, sales tax and other federal taxes for the affected traders. It also urges the FBR to waive penalties, surcharges and default fines.
Taha Ahmed Khan has further requested the issuance of a special SRO or relief notification by the FBR. The letter notes that the incident was unforeseen and beyond the control of the traders.
He said that tax relief would help the affected families get back on their feet. Referring to the Gul Plaza tragedy, he said that the incident resulted in the loss of precious lives as well as livelihoods.
The MQM leader asserted that the affected traders have been regular and compliant taxpayers.
