Karachiites 'not happy' with NEPRA's decision to renew K-Electric's licence for 20 years

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has extended Karachi-Electric's (KE) power distribution and supply licences for another 20 years.

"In exercise of the powers conferred under Section-20 and 21 of the Regulation of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power Act, 1997, as amended from time to time, the Authority hereby grants the Distribution License to: K-Electric Limited," the notification issued by power regulatory body read.

"This license is given under my hand on 19th day of January two thousand and twenty four and expires on 18th day of January two thousand twenty four," it added.

Taking to microblogging site X, CEO K-Electric Moonis Alvi wrote: "KE’s dream to continue serving Karachi has AH fulfilled today! The Distribution & Supply Licenses granted by NEPRA,valid for 20yrs, will further fuel our ambition to conquer new frontiers in energy sector and attain service excellence."

The KE's previous 20-year licence was expired in July 2023, which was later extended for six-months by Nepra.

Nepra decided to renew KE's licence after a comprehensive hearing that concluded on November 28, 2023.

Under the new agreement, KE will continue its power supply operations in Karachi, Bela, Uthal, Hub, Vinder, Dhabeji, and Gharo.

However, the decision has sparked deep frustration among citizens of the metropolis.
