Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban have agreed to a temporary 48-hour ceasefire at the request of the Taliban regime, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) announced on Wednesday.

The Foreign Office stated, “At the request of the Afghan Taliban regime, and with mutual consent, Pakistan and the Taliban have agreed to a temporary ceasefire for 48 hours, effective from 6pm this evening.”

During this period, both sides are expected to engage in constructive dialogue aimed at achieving a positive and sustainable resolution to ongoing security issues.

The announcement follows recent precision strikes by the Pakistan Army on Taliban positions in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, which, according to security sources, successfully destroyed multiple strongholds in response to previous militant attacks.

It said that the army struck the Afghan Taliban’s Battalion Headquarters No. 4 and 8, as well as Border Brigade No. 5 in Kandahar. "The targets were carefully selected and located away from civilian areas, and were successfully destroyed," sources said.

In Kabul, they said that the operation targeted the command and leadership centers of the Khawarij network, which officials described as responsible for recent acts of cross-border terrorism.

The strikes came after Pakistan took serious notice of recent border aggression by the Afghan Taliban. Preliminary reports suggest that dozens of Taliban and foreign militants were killed in the operation, though official casualty figures have not been released.
