Pakistan reports progress in Tehran peace talks

Pakistan says “significant progress” was made during high-level talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as Islamabad renewed efforts to help end the ongoing US-Iran conflict and ease regional tensions.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who accompanied Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir to Tehran, said their meeting with Pezeshkian was “very positive and productive”. 

He said discussions focused on the conflict, wider Middle East tensions and steps required to restore the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Washington and Tehran.

Naqvi said the Iranian president openly shared his government’s concerns, while both sides held a constructive exchange on the way forward. He expressed hope that the momentum would contribute to further progress and lasting regional peace.

According to Pakistan’s military, Munir and Naqvi also discussed measures to prevent further escalation, reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and bring about an expedited end to the conflict. The sides also exchanged views on regional peace and a negotiated settlement.

During their day-long Tehran visit, the Pakistani delegation met several senior Iranian officials, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. Iranian officials praised Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate dialogue and de-escalation.

Naqvi did not disclose details of the reported progress, but the talks mark Islamabad’s latest attempt to revive stalled US-Iran negotiations and address the continuing dispute over the Strait of Hormuz.
