ECP receives record 28,626 nominations as scrutiny begins

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) received a record 28,626 nomination papers from candidates across the country by the submission deadline.
Out of these, 7,713 are for National Assembly seats, and 18,546 for provincial assemblies (general).
The data shows that 7,242 men, along with 471 women, filed nomination papers for the National Assembly seats (general), whereas for four provincial assemblies, 17,744 men and 802 women submitted their papers for the general election.
The scrutiny process began on Monday and will last until December 30, with appeals possible from January 3, 2024.
The list of candidates will be issued on January 11, and withdrawals are allowed until January 12.
The ECP aims to allot electoral symbols on January 13.
The nomination papers include reserved seats for women and non-Muslims, in which 361 men and 32 women have submitted their nomination papers for provincial assemblies. For National Assembly seats, the number stands at 140 and 10, respectively.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 5,278 candidates submitted nomination papers for the upcoming elections, including 1,322 for National Assembly and 3,464 for provincial assembly seats.
In Balochistan, 2,669 nomination papers were filed, covering 631 for National Assembly and 1,788 for provincial assembly seats.
Punjab recorded a total of 13,823 nominations, split between 3,871 for National Assembly and 9,029 for provincial assembly seats, with 796 for women's reserved seats and 127 for non-Muslim reserved seats.
In Islamabad, 208 people submitted papers for the National Assembly, and 150 for non-Muslim reserved seats
