Women around the world are being honoured today (March 8) on International Women's Day for their contribution to politics, society and the economy. This year's theme by the United Nations (UN), "Investing in Women: Accelerate Progress," emphasises the importance of women's economic empowerment.

Pakistan observes International Women's Day with rallies, seminars, conferences, and other events.

The country also witnesses the annual Aurat March, a powerful demonstration demanding the fulfillment of women's and minority rights in all social and legal spheres.

Karachi will host the 'Aurat Ehtajaji Mela Aur March' rally, with similar marches planned in other parts of the country.

The Aurat March Karachi chapter issued a powerful manifesto with six demands. They called for the Sindh government to implement a law protecting home-based workers and granting them social security benefits.

The march called for an end to violence against women and minorities, safe havens for abuse victims, transgender rights, and a return to democracy.

Human rights violations in Balochistan, including enforced disappearances and violence against activists and journalists, were condemned by the manifesto. It urged the government to uphold human rights.

In a message for International Women's Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif pledged to empower women by creating opportunities for them to play a greater role in society.

“On this day I promise to the capable women of my country that our government will continue to take steps for equitable rights of women, their protection, and for provision of equal opportunities of education and progress,” he said.

PM Shehbaz acknowledged the positive role women play in human civilisation and vowed “to elevate their status in society”

He further said that Islam encourages women to play a positive role in all aspects of life, without diminishing their dignity and honour.

He added that present society offers numerous examples of women's valuable contributions in various fields.
