Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif has opted out of the race for prime minister after his party faced setbacks in the recent election and lost key seats to its rival, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

PML-N announced his younger brother and former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif as the candidate for the top post in the country.

After Nawaz Sharif's highly anticipated return from self-imposed exile and the acquittal in corruption cases, he exuded confidence in his victory in the general elections. His main opponent, PTI, faced uncertainty due to the loss of its bat symbol and numerous legal challenges.

However, PTI-backed independents, with a variety of election symbols, achieved a sweeping victory in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, delivered setbacks in Punjab, and secured 90 seats in the National Assembly, surprising many.

Since his initial appearance to claim PML-N's victory the day after the election, Nawaz Sharif has remained absent from the public eye. Notably, he was also missing from the press conference where the top leadership of PPP, PTI, PML-N, and MQM-P announced plans to form a coalition government at the center.

Nawaz’s followers are dismayed by his withdrawal from premier candidacy. PML-N supporters paid tribute to his political legacy, spanning over four decades, on the microblogging site 'X.’
