NDMA warns of rising flood risks as Chenab sees medium-level flooding

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday warned of rising flood risks across several parts of Pakistan as monsoon rains continued to swell rivers and streams, with medium-level flooding reported at key points along the Chenab River.

As per the statement of NEOC of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), moderate level floods were observed in Khanki, Qadirabad and Chiniot Bridge on Chenab River, whereas moderate level of floods were observed in Palkhu Nala of Wazirabad.

Moderate level of floods were still going on in Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa on Indus River, Marala and Trimmu on Chenab River, Balloki and Sidhnai on Ravi River and Nowshera on Kabul River. In addition to that, low level of floods were also witnessed in Nala Aik and Palkhu Nala Cantonment Bridge.

Furthermore, NDMA informed that flow of water in Chenab River was going to increase in the coming 24 hours in Marala, Khanki, Qadirabad and Chiniot Bridge. The levels of water in Trimmu Barrage were also going to reach the level of medium floods during the same time period.

It is also predicted that flash floods were also expected in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, seasonal streams in KP and north western parts of Balochistan during the next 24 to 48 hours.

Urban flooding was also expected in Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Jhang, Multan, Hafizabad and Lahore due to the ongoing heavy monsoon rain.

This authority informed the citizens not to travel unnecessarily in areas affected by floods and told drivers to look into weather predictions and conditions on roads prior to their journey.

This NDMA has ordered all concerned departments to remain vigilant about the situation at risk-prone places, keep the emergency rescue team ready, and ensure road repairs within no time, in case the roads are closed.

The authority also warned that landslide, debris flows, and flash floods would be an eminent risk in hilly areas during monsoon season.

Citizens have been asked to avoid stopping near riverbanks, hilly areas, and mountain routes, which are susceptible to landslides.

It was further advised not to walk across flooded roads, streams, and flowing water, even if the water was shallow; people and vehicles can get swept off by it.
