The proposed Disco Bakery flyover in Karachi has come under scrutiny before the start of construction, with concerns raised over its alignment with the upcoming K-IV water supply project, ongoing transport infrastructure works and existing encroachments along the corridor.

Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab recently announced that construction on the flyover would begin on August 14 and be completed within 90 days. However, officials and residents have questioned whether the project should proceed before the planned installation of a major K-IV water pipeline.

Officials associated with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP), speaking on condition of anonymity, said a 96-inch K-IV (R-2) water pipeline is planned along the same route as the proposed flyover.

According to the officials, the pipeline will extend from Abul Hassan Isphahani Road to Disco Bakery and onward to Gulshan Chowrangi. The project will require excavation of the road to a depth of approximately six to eight feet, along with additional working space on both sides, affecting the entire corridor.

They said undertaking flyover construction before completion of the pipeline could create engineering and logistical challenges, while future excavation may also affect the flyover structure and disrupt traffic.
