Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s call for civil disobedience has not resonated with senior PTI leadership, with many deeming it impractical and warning it could risk their disqualification from parliament.
A report by journalist Ansar Abbasi in The News states that PTI leaders voiced their doubts about the civil disobedience movement, as they were not consulted before the call was made.
Imran Khan's recent announcement has come as a surprise to the party and is largely considered unfeasible. Most party leaders have expressed their reservations in an internal WhatsApp group, labeling the move neither practical nor timely.
According to sources, senior party leaders, including PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja, Ali Amin Gandapur, and Asad Qaiser, only learned about the call for civil disobedience through Imran Khan's social media post.
As per the report, one source stated that the call is unrealistic, as overseas Pakistanis are unlikely to stop sending remittances to their families in Pakistan, nor will people cease paying their electricity and gas bills. Even PTI leaders would find it difficult to participate in such an initiative, as it could lead to their disqualification as members of parliament.
A PTI leader remarked that whoever is advising Imran Khan on such matters is causing harm to both the party and its founding chairman. The November 24 protest call was also issued by Imran Khan without consulting party leadership, which had upset several senior PTI leaders.
They had planned to meet him to reconsider the decision, but this could not happen as authorities denied them access to their imprisoned leader.
PTI leaders now plan to raise the matter with Imran Khan and persuade him to withdraw the call.
