The Punjab government has announced plans to switch all stations and stops of the Orange Line Metro Train to solar power, aiming to reduce operating costs and dependence on conventional electricity sources.

According to project officials, a 1.6-megawatt solar power plant will be installed to supply energy to the train’s stations. The solar-generated electricity will be used to power escalators, platforms, and other station operations.

Currently, the provincial government provides billions of rupees annually in subsidies to maintain the Orange Line’s operations. Officials estimate that transitioning to solar energy will save millions of rupees each month in electricity expenses.

The move is part of the government’s broader effort to promote sustainability and reduce the financial burden of public transportation systems.

It also aligns with growing national and global trends toward clean and renewable energy adoption.

The Orange Line Metro, Pakistan’s first metro train system, operates in Lahore and has faced high operational costs since its launch. The new solar initiative is expected to improve long-term efficiency and environmental sustainability.
