Transgender activist Shahzadi Rai alleged that members of the transgender community were targeted by a mob on Sunday in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area of Karachi.
According to Rai, the attackers threatened and abused the community, however, the reason was not disclosed by the activist.
As per another trans activist, Aradhiya Khan, who shared videos of the incident on Instagram, the incident took place at Jauhar Mor, where a crowd of over 100 men harassed the transgender community.
“Another mob attack at Johar Mor! Once again, our community is being targeted and hunted down. We are facing threats of violence and need immediate intervention, please step in to stop this cycle of terror. Lives are at stake!” she wrote in the caption accompanying the videos.
Aradhiya furthered on, “We got home from the police station at 3am, there was a mob attack and attempted mob lynching on Shahzadi Rai and 9-10pm other trans women, surrounded by over a 100 men in Gulistan=e-Jauhar. One of them was beaten up badly while the others were harassed and pushed around. They were all threatened with murder on sight.“
Rai condemned the deteriorating safety of transgender people in the city. The activist argued that a lack of action from the authorities has left the trans community vulnerable.
“I was informed that a member of our community had been attacked. When I arrived at the scene, the mob seized us and threatened to murder us," she said in a video posted on her X account.
A mob attack occurred at Johar Mor. These individuals first beat members of my community, then threatened to kill us openly. Please help and kindly tag the police. @sindhpolicedmc8 @BBhuttoZardari @PPP_Org @AuratMarchKHI @TMItalks pic.twitter.com/FphfXTXSRL
