KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced plans to introduce the Pink Electric Motorcycle Programme aimed at enhancing female mobility through sustainable transportation, officials said on Thursday.

The decision was discussed in a provincial cabinet meeting, chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, where the procurement of 1,000 pink electric motorcycles for women was presented.

The initiative, designed by the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA), seeks to improve women’s independence and economic empowerment.

According to an official statement, the allocation of electric motorcycles will be conducted through an open and transparent balloting process, with Rs300 million allocated for the programme.

Eligible applicants must be permanent Sindh residents, students or working women, and possess a valid two-wheeler driving license. Additionally, recipients cannot sell the motorcycles for seven years.

The cabinet noted the increasing global adoption of electric motorcycles by women due to their affordability, eco-friendliness, and low maintenance.

In addition, the SMTA plans to procure 50 public transport buses for Karachi, including 15 double-decker buses and 35 electric buses, with Rs3 billion allocated for the project. The double-decker buses will operate on Sharea Faisal, officials confirmed.
