SSGC rules out gas leak, says temporary odorant testing behind gas smell in Karachi

The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Sunday said a temporary increase in the amount of odorant added to natural gas during testing of its odorisation plants was responsible for an unusually strong gas smell reported in parts of Karachi.

According to the company, the testing is being carried out as part of the commissioning of a new gas pipeline near Abul Hasan Isphahani Road.

SSGC said the temporary increase in the odorant concentration may cause gas to smell stronger than usual in some areas, prompting complaints from residents who suspected gas leakages.

However, the utility clarified that all system pressure levels remain normal and no gas leakage has been detected.

It explained that the smell is solely due to the higher-than-usual amount of odorant being injected into the gas during the testing process and does not indicate any fault in the gas distribution system.

SSGC advised consumers to remain calm and continue their normal daily activities, assuring them that the situation is temporary and poses no cause for concern.
