Islamabad Inspector General of Police Ali Nasir Rizvi says the suspect who shot dead a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) officer was arrested within nine hours of the incident.

Speaking at a press conference, IG Rizvi said the suspect allegedly opened fire after PAF Group Captain Asim Tariq intervened to help a woman during an argument on Islamabad's 9th Avenue.

According to the police chief, the officer noticed the suspect trying to forcibly take the woman away on a motorcycle and stopped to intervene while on his way to an official assignment in Rawalpindi.

"Captain Tariq asked the suspect to stay away from the woman," Rizvi said. The suspect initially moved ahead on his motorcycle before returning and stopping beside the officer's car.

The suspect then allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired, fatally shooting the group captain at the scene. The woman had by then moved to the passenger side of the officer's vehicle, the IG added.

Rizvi described the slain officer as a true patriot who acted courageously to protect a woman in distress, saying he did what any responsible citizen should have done.

The police chief said the suspect and the woman both worked at a cash-and-carry store in Islamabad's G-6 sector. The woman was employed as a representative for a cosmetics company, while the suspect represented a frozen food brand.
