LAHORE: The Punjab government declared a “health emergency” in Lahore and Multan, the cities most affected by severe smog, as Punjab faces an escalating air pollution crisis.
The provincial capital was recorded as the most polluted major city globally, with an alarming average air quality index (AQI) of 637 points categorized as “hazardous.”
Meanwhile, Multan's AQI soared to 810 this morning, positioning it as the most polluted city in Pakistan.
During a press conference held in Lahore, Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stated, “Currently, the smog [crisis] has transformed into a health crisis.”
In light of the critical circumstances, Aurangzeb declared that a complete lockdown would be implemented in both Multan and Lahore over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, noting that further decisions would be made the following Wednesday.
“From this Saturday until next Sunday, all construction activities in the two cities will be halted to decrease additional pollution,” the provincial minister explained.
Furthermore, Marriyum announced an extension of school closures in smog-affected regions throughout the province, with the exception of Murree, for another week due to the toxic air quality. “Colleges and universities will transition to online classes to prioritize student safety,” she added.
The minister also shared updated operating hours for restaurants in Lahore and Multan, permitting dine-in options until 4 pm and allowing only takeaway services until 8 pm.
Addressing the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) request for a sustainable smog control strategy, she noted that the Punjab government has formulated a 10-year plan aimed at tackling the smog issue.
“For the first time, the Punjab government has developed a 10-year climate change policy that addresses various concerns such as floods, natural disasters, rehabilitation, recovery, and the protection of vulnerable areas,” she asserted.
