Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Thursday expressed firm opposition to the extension of service terms in the judiciary, military, and bureaucracy.

Speaking during a National Assembly session in Islamabad, Fazlur Rehman also criticized the decision to extend the retirement age of judges, a policy introduced during General Pervez Musharraf's rule.

He questioned the shift in stance among those who previously opposed such extensions but now appear to support them. "The process of granting extensions, whether in the army, judiciary, or bureaucracy, is flawed," he stated. "If this trend continues, even the parliament might one day demand extensions."

He further criticized the inefficiencies in the justice system, highlighting that cases often drag on for generations. Fazlur Rehman argued that the judicial system, inherited from the British, is outdated and urgently needs reform.

Referring to the extension of judges' retirement ages, he noted, "The retirement age of judges was increased during Musharraf's era, but now it seems that everyone is focused on ensuring 'their' preferred Chief Justice remains in place."
