Gen Z, in honour of birthday of Quaid-e-azam, gathered at Seaview Karachi in huge numbers to clean up all the garbage accumulated there over time.

An initiative by Hammad Foundation, which was later joined by many locals too alongside the volunteers of the NGO. One of the volunteers claimed that if such activities are carried out twice in six months, the city would remain clean for the public.

Another volunteer said that “even if people throw garbage a hundred times, we will clean it up a hundred times as it is our city and we are responsible for its cleanliness and maintenance”.

They further said that this initiative will portray a “softer image” of Karachi which has been badly hampered in the past by factors like dumper mafia, street crimes, poor infrastructure and many more.

While cleaning up the beach, the youth felt a wave of motivation to further work for the betterment of the city, in different ways. Even a foreigner from Russia was seen joining hands with the people in completing the noble task. Students were also seen involved in the prolific mission.

Seaview is a place where mostly people go for recreational purposes or to wind down after a hectic week, but, according to a volunteer, “people come here, have fun, enjoy snacks and litter the beach with snack wrappers and what not, which is absolutely unethical”. He emphasized the importance of people taking responsibility of keeping the city clean by themselves. Volunteers were informed of this initiative through social media, and they turned out in thousands to help, projecting their love for the city and consequently for Pakistan.

One of the volunteers said that “people should bring their kids in such activities to create awareness on cleanliness”. He said that only learning about such topics in books at school is not enough, practical implementation and demonstration is much more effective. For a long-lasting change the youth and the children should be motivated to take part in such activities regularly, not occasionally.
