Former UK minister Lord Zac Goldsmith has urged the government of UK to press Pakistan over the treatment of former PM Imran Khan, raising concerns in the House of Lords about his access to lawyers, family and medical care.
Speaking in the parliamentary motion led by Baroness Alexander of Cleveden, Goldsmith, said that while the case is “an internal matter for Pakistan,” the alleged denial of basic rights for Khan could not be overlooked.
He also highlighted reports suggesting that Khan has been denied access to his lawyer, his family including his two sons, and even doctors while in prison, and that his health is “deteriorating rapidly.”
Furthermore, the British government’s parliamentary record shows ministers have raised the need for Khan to receive appropriate medical care and humane detention, but stressed Pakistan’s judicial process is sovereign.
Back in Pakistan, his sister Aleema Khan publicly criticised PTI leaders for what she described as inaction over his health and legal situation, urging party figures to take a stronger stance.
