‘iPhone Duo’: Apple unveils first foldable phone — how much does it cost?

Apple has unveiled its first foldable iPhone, called the iPhone Duo, which starts at $1,999.

The device has a passport-like design with rounded edges and opens out into a wide display that can be used horizontally or vertically. It also features a smaller screen on the front when folded. Apple said the Duo is its thinnest iPhone when fully opened.

The launch was the first major iPhone presentation led by new Apple CEO John Ternus, following Tim Cook’s handover of the company’s leadership.

Ternus presented the iPhone as a personal artificial intelligence hub, with a strong focus on privacy. He said Apple’s AI systems process data on the device whenever possible rather than relying on external servers.

Apple also showcased an upgraded Siri, which executive Lilian Rincon said would be able to work with around 300,000 apps when released.

Alongside the foldable model, Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which retain the traditional non-folding design. Prices start at $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max, both $100 higher than the starting prices of their predecessors.

The iPhone 18 Pro models feature Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, designed in part to improve the performance of advanced AI models running directly on the devices.

Apple also announced a new system called Apple Reference Image to help verify the authenticity of photographs taken with the iPhone 18 Pro. The company said the feature will also support SynthID, a technology used to identify images generated or modified using AI. Apple Reference Image will not be available in the European Union or China.

The company also announced new AirPods starting at $129, with noise cancellation now available in the lower-priced range. A $149 model will add features including wireless charging and controls on the stem for adjusting volume.

Apple’s latest smartwatch lineup includes the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, which the company is positioning around health and fitness features.

The new watches feature redesigned sensors that monitor heart rate more frequently and support features designed to assess recovery and fitness. Apple said new silicon and improved sensors make the latest models its most accurate wearables for heart-rate tracking.
