WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature that allows users to share motion photos directly in chats, groups, and channels, according to WABetaInfo.
The feature enables users to send short, moving images that capture moments just before and after a photo is taken. In most cases, these motion photos also include audio, providing a more immersive experience.
Similar functionality already exists on many Android devices under different names — Samsung Galaxy calls it “Motion Photo,” while Google Pixel refers to it as “Top Shot” or “Motion Photos.” WhatsApp’s integration removes the need for third-party apps to share such content within its platform.
When selecting a motion photo from the gallery, users can choose to send it in dynamic mode so the recipient views and hears it as originally captured. If preferred, it can also be converted into a still image using the drawing editor before sending.
Shared motion photos display a small motion icon in the top-left corner of their preview, indicating that the file contains movement and sound.
Currently, the feature is available to select beta testers running the latest WhatsApp beta for Android. The company says it will gradually expand availability to more users in upcoming updates.
